Mission Support Unit’s Family Event on 8 September 2018 By Ron Marafioti

The local Mission Support Unit of the National Guard hosted its annual Family Day Event at Quonset on Saturday, 8 September 2018. A variety of activities were offered to the participants, including a Fun House for those weighing less than 100-lbs, horse rides provided by the Dare to Dream (D2DR) Program, face painting, hay rides, exciting rides in a C-130 to the spouses over the Bay and Block Island, and various discussion tables manned by organizations who provide various services for our veterans and their Families, including Providence’s Veterans Administration.

In addition, representatives of the Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU225) were invited to this event to provide fly casting instruction for any of willing participants of this Event. Although only a few adults took advantage of our casting instructions, the youngsters kept our TU volunteers busy…and yes, well entertained. Every child became engrossed in casting their fly into a hula hoop target, and many did not stop trying until they had achieved at least two successes. What an adventure for both trainee and instructor!!

The Chapter thanks member Brian Robitaille for setting up this opportunity for us to participate in this tremendous annual event. Also, thank you to another organization TU225 partners with to bolster our veterans support activities, the D2DR Program, especially Cyndi Crostek, for bringing both large and small horses to add to the entertainment available to the members and Families of the Mission Support Unit. Lastly, the Chapter thanks Board members Gene Bates and Jim Less for their instructing skills and patience in keeping the trainees focused on the techniques of fly casting needed, and getting their barbless flies into the target hula hoops. This was one of those events from which the participants, Unit members, supporting organizations, tour guides, and fly casting instructors all felt that they had had a good day, and had accomplished something good. For the members of TU225, this was our way of saying “Thank you for your Service” to the members and Families of the Mission Support Unit, National Guard, Quonset
